Inmarsat
BGAN - System Overview
Broadband
Global Area Network
What
is BGAN
Inmarsat’s
Broadband Global Area Network – BGAN – is the
world’s first mobile
communications service of any kind to provide both voice and broadband
data simultaneously through a single, truly portable
device on a global
basis. It is also the first mobile communications service to offer
guaranteed data rates on demand.
Based on IP technology, BGAN makes it
possible for users to connect their notebook PC or Mac to the Internet
or their corporate network at speeds up to half a megabit per second.
They can remotely access all the applications they would normally
access from their desktop via a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN)
connection. They can even make a telephone call at the same time.
The BGAN
service will offer seamless
and continuous coverage across about 85 per cent of the world's landmass,
even in areas where terrestrial telecoms networks are unreliable or
non-existent.
The service
is accessed via small, lightweight
satellite terminals - about the size of a notebook PC -
which are easy to carry, quick to set up and shut down, and simple to
use.

Who
BGAN is for
BGAN
is for anyone who would benefit from taking their office environment
with them when they travel to locations where the local telecoms
infrastructure is unreliable or non-existent.
It
is for users who want to run all their favourite desktop computer
applications - securely, reliably and at speeds to match terrestrial
broadband networks - when their work takes them away from the office.
BGAN
will help users to be just as productive away from the office as they
are back at base and you do not need any specialist technical expertise
to set up the service or use it.
Journalists,
military personnel, aid workers and other established satellite users
will especially welcome the superior performance and lighter load of
the new Inmarsat BGAN terminals.
But
other users, such as civil engineers, consultants, project managers,
sales managers, anyone, in fact, who wants dependable, secure broadband
access when travelling in locations with unreliable or no telecoms
networks - will now be able to reap the benefits of mobile satellite
communications.
